Quick answer
Add crossplay for Xbox or game pass support. Hello everyone and welcome to a quick co-op guide for Valheim 1.0. After over 1100 hours of Valheim I have developed a ton of Bad habits and I bet you’re probably doing the same, like what I’m doing with this chest. Valheim, one of the most popular survival and indie games of all time.
If you want to connect on a crossplay server, you need a public IP or join code. As all of you know, co-op has always been available in the game. Today, I’ll explain that and analyze 15 other awful Valheim habits you’ve probably developed and showcase how you can BREAK THEM with a word from War Thunder a little later. But, before we started development, I also spent a year planning.
With the full release, there are many more players joining, especially from other consoles. To start any build the absolute first thing you should be doing is leveling and clearing a large plot of land with your pickaxe and hoe. In that year, I had big dreams, but I never dreamt it would take up to 70 hours to play through the whole world. So, let's take a look at how to make co-op work.
Server basics
Alternatively, you can use wooden or stronger material poles like core or iron to create a frame for the foundation of your build. And now, I'm going to finally take you guys after 3 years on the full journey of making the completely free-to-play Valheim adventure map. First, you will need a character. By doing this you guarantee a flat and even starting point for your floors completely taking the terrain formation out of the equation.
So, you can just sit back and relax, and let's take a trip back to the alpha, where it all began. Whether you're the host or a guest, you can create one after firing up the game, and once you have it there, you will get a few options. Next might just be a me thing but up until literally a week ago, this was how I finished almost all of my roofs leaving gaps at either end. So, in the beginning, we started from almost nothing on a brand new Valheim map with a very unique world spawn isolated on an island.
You can even add a seed to the world if you have one, or let the game randomize it for you. For some reason I never realized how effective corner roof pieces were in completing a roof. This would become a little safe oasis for the main town, where you come back to many times throughout your adventure through portals that you connect yourself inside the other towns. After you finish setting up all your server settings, you just have to enter the world and start sending invites, which will vary for all players.
How to set it up
Now I know its far from perfect! And I've never shown it online. Remember that if you also set a password for your server, you also need to give it to everyone joining your world. Feel free to laugh at me but surely there’s a least one person out there making this mistake with me.
So, I mentioned starting from almost nothing, and that's because I started off this journey by using some really cool mods by a mod developer named Jer. If you are the guest, you just need to wait for the code or invite. Once your build is complete, one of the best ways to protect it from raids is to create raised earth walls. Shout out to him because without him, none of this would be possible.
If you have played on another server, just head to the join game tab, and you can look at all the servers you have played before, or that are labeled as community server. However, you absolutely need to break the habit of raising these in the non-cardinal directions. With these mods, I made blueprints of and brought in every build that I had ever created on my YouTube channel into one large area. If you're joining the latter, remember to look at the modifiers, as some players like to make the game more challenging or a bit easier.
Crossplay and hosting
For clarity, those are north, south, east, and west which you can use your yellow player icon on the mini-map to easily orient yourself in one of these 4 directions. And that I called a build graveyard. For dedicated servers, that will vary depending on the hosting service you pick. By raising earth facing in any of them you get nice clean looking walls compared to the ugly clump of earth if deviating from them.
Instead, they provided a good head start with a build, but then I got to work and modified it into three similar builds to create a theme for a few of the towns. There are several out there, so we recommend googling them if that's something you want to do. Similarly, if trenches are more your thing you should also dig while facing these ways for cleanest results. And along that road, we added the rest of the locations in the map using the rest of the builds in the build graveyard as the foundation.
Remember that dedicated servers are online all the time, while player-hosted servers only stay on when the host is on. This is a new one but one you’ll need to keep yourself from leaving home without your favorite trinket with the new call to arms update. Those locations then all needed their own loot, lore, and enemies. These items are powerful equipables that once their adrenaline threshold is reached will give huge buffs to the player.
Best practices
But more importantly, it needed to have increasingly better loot and more difficult enemies to prepare you for each upcoming boss. Another common sin that players often commit, is taking far too many things with them on adventures. And it needed to have more and more connections with the lore to connect the whole world together with a story. Inventory space comes at a premium and has only become a bigger source of player pain with each of the past two updates adding new items to carry.
And which is about the only inhabitants left in the world called the elders and their ancient knowledge. I do think the devs will take action to address this issue ,but for now, we can take some accountability on ourselves to ease the pain. And we also made a read me. Before leaving on adventure, ask yourself what you really need.
And that's when the Valheim Ashlands update came out. Do you truly need to take your hoe and cultivator into infested mines? So, I got to work building all new locations. Are three different types of arrows necessary?
Tips
It took months, but in the end I even convinced Dekar to come back and add a few areas himself. I know the mistlands weapons are cool but don’t you think 5 is taking things too far? So, the adventure map could have been done right there. Building a beautiful home requires a TON of wood if you’re an uncivilized caveman like me there is a good chance you’ve left a wasteland of stumps around your base following a big project.
The whole map was playable, and people were enjoying it. The effects of this bad habit are twofold. In the alpha, I created the first road with advanced tools from Jerr's Mods, painting on quick textures to get things started. But its also going to negatively impact the performance of your game.
So, Eikthyr, the boss of the meadows, summons a storm and lightning, so his road got storm damage. Every instance, or object near you takes up the games compute power which might lower your frames per second, making the game feel choppy and laggy. Moder, the frozen dragon of the mountains, got ice. If you’re curious, hit F2 on your keyboard to display your instances in the top left.
