Quick answer
Getting max skills in Valheim has completely changed in 2026 with new tools like Twig and Trinket making it easier than ever. Magic was added to the game in the new Mistlands biome and extended into the Ashlands and presumably beyond. Although, you can't forget the limits of building around the sacrificial stones due to those pesky magical forces, so space will be constrained. Perfect dodges, trinkets, and even a magic system have made combat so much deeper and richer.
Peering into the mist is where the choices get simple again with your decision depending on your combat style, magic or melee. Because the berries that keep you alive in the meadows aren't going to cut it when you're being hunted through a magical fog by an insect the size of a Honda Civic. I'll show you my skill leveling dojos to max every skill in the game including this revolutionary blood magic setup that turns Valheim's most notoriously painful skill into one of the easiest to max. The lightning chance is too good to pass up, and there could be a super powerful combo of hybrid magic melee builds.
The mistlands for the first time introduces magic and therefore, I want to give you a recommendation for both magic and melee. The eight and ninth skills are likely the most difficult to level in all Valheim in Blood and Elemental magic. And hey, if you get your hands on an arsonist's magic wand, you can even help clean that yucky flammable goo off your neighbors. Plus, this staff is best for leveling the notoriously difficult to master blood magic skill.
Magic basics
Magic users will have four options available to you in the Northern Vengeance, Spirit Caller, Echo Spike, and personal favorite, Lightning Strike. (09:43) And this magician will do two things. With the introduction of the Mistlands, Valheim adds magic for the first time. As we approach the Mistlands, the game takes a turn with the introduction of magic, therefore offering two sets in the Care Pace for traditional warriors and iderweave for the wizards among us.
And speaking of magic, the ashlands update introduced a hack that makes kilns completely obsolete. Fun fact, due to the stone golem's frost immunity, they can be trapped in a hole and used to level up your elemental magic skill with the frost staff easily. To no surprise, with this enabled, it completely rids the magical biome of the dreaded fog. I don't know how much magic stuff I'm going to make right now.
Magic staffs can be crafted and use Valheim's version of mana called eitr to deal battle. Um, you know, with with uh like the Mistlands introduces magic. However, as Vikings quickly learn, magic is kinda busted in Valheim, making for many of the most powerful builds and the pulsating earrings just straight up make any mages life easier. But the mistens also introduces an entirely new way of playing, magic.
How to unlock it
For magic, elemental is easiest where we can grab the staff of frost and revisit our old pal Twig. However, if we’re being realistic here, magic is the absolute best approach. With that out of the way, lay into the stone golem as your elemental magic skill flies up! The top 5 brings magic back into the fold with the staff of frost which could arguable top this list.
Third, the Echo Spike, I believe works just as it sounds where its magical projectiles hit targets, reflect off, and bounce around giving the opportunity to impact multiple targets. Now, if you want to build a magical build, you'll also get some new toys to play with on the magical side. For this reason, I will provide both my melee and magic recommendations for each biome going forward. To craft it like the carpace, you need a new workbench, but this time the galer table for all your magic crafting goodness.
I would like to make magic stuff post Ashlands. But first, let's max your weapon skills. The Mistlands environment has been transformed from a swamp-like forest covered in webs to a magical place immersed in fog. you've been through like four bosses and and and now there's magic suddenly.
Spells and staffs
If I had to pick here, I’m always going to go earrings simply because of how strong magic is in the game. You're going to want resources that support a magic focused play style while still providing survivability. As for blood magic, we're going to establish this brilliant setup discovered by CronDuster. With the bubble summoned you’ll be effectively immune for its spells duration allowing you to absorb 200 damage at base blood magic level rising to 700 at max.
Next is blood magic which gains 1 XP from protection bubble breaks, 0.75 XP from a summoned melee skeleton hit and .5 from a skeleton arrow hit. But magic is just too strong with the staff of embers securing the second spot. The Hexen will float around the dungeon spewing lightning magic at you and are a huge pain to hit constantly whirling around in the air. Since you are going to become a magician, you will have to adjust your diet.
That said, the power of magic in my opinion is combining staves together. But if we're really being honest with ourselves, magic's really OP in Valheim, so you might be better off with the weave. This is kind of like the magic place. The first thing you want to do is build a small sheltered hut with a fire nearby as key to leveling your skills is optimizing for stamina regeneration.
Best uses
Cracking the top 5, for the magic enjoyers out there are the pulsating earrings. Combine them with some sap harvested from the ancient roots back in the Mistlands, and bam, big magic meter. With each hit, skeleton earn points I blood magic skill and according to CronDuster, you can go from level zero to 100 in just a few hours. The ashlands like the mist offer the same conundrum of magic versus melee but of course, I have my choice for both.
Due to the infrequency of bubble breaks and preserving the lives of your skeletons, I like to employ a archer skeleton strategy for leveling blood magic. Its versatile too as depending on your food choices you can use this with a full magic toolset or combine it with melee to add more forgiveness to being hit. So be prepared for constant low health, and this is another reason why I say you shouldn't prioritize health, because you will always have low health with all the magic you will spam. Both rested and resting will elevate its rate and the rested being especially important also having the hidden perk of doubling experience gain.
Magic is just straight up busted in this game and being able to regenerate it 25% faster is simply nuts. For magic users, smoked fish is a good food to keep around. Beyond that, keep your rested buff to maintain the two times XP bonus and AFK to max blood magic. For magic the choice is easy in the staff of the wilds.
Tips
In this case you will want to find a greydwarf spawner like how we did for our blood magic skill. Make sure you eat three of the max stamina foods you have available and consider lingering stamina tasty meads and equipping the bronze pendant to maximize stamina regeneration. Magic is the easiest way to gain adrenaline, it’s the most powerful combat style, and its only hindered by eitr regeneration which this trinket boosts massively, how could it be anything else? It’s the best magic weapon in the biome for generating adrenaline and its juts a blast.
From there, place a sheltered workbench in your hut and with your back to the bench, place a twig dummy just in front of you but facing away from you. But if magic isn’t your thing, the berzerkir axes are the no brainer choice and specifically the iolite, lighting variant. With his back turned, he won't return fire allowing you free reign. Equip your weapon of choice and spam attacking Twig.
Each hit will give you 1.5 XP per hit for all melee types with spears being the exception leveling faster with 2.25 experience per strike. I recommend you use the wooden types for each class or just your naked knuckles for the fist skill as they use the least amount of stamina per attack. As your weapon breaks, turn to the bench and repair or when your rested buff expires, leave the room, replenish the buff and get back to work. In the late game, you can take the strategy further by wearing the full ask armor paired with the Berserker meads.
